Proud Flesh

Dumptruck - Live at the Metro, Chicago, IL (11/20/87) Part 1
Dumptruck - Live at the Metro, Chicago, IL (11/20/87) Part 2

Guitars. That's all we need. Soothe our broken hearts. Mend our failing minds. Prop our tired elbows. Tie our neglected laces. Just throw in some achingly sweet low-key melodies and kinda off-key vocals, madly enigmatic lyrics, a country-twang or two and you got yourself Dumptruck.

Never got to see these boys live, a real shame. But I listened the hell outta my tape of For the Country with D is for Dumptruck on the flip side.

If any song titles are wrong, it's as usual all my fault. I haven't talked about that yet, but quite often in the bootleg trading/collecting world you get handfuls of shows that you've got less than nothing on. I've got dozens of "Unknown venue/Unknown date" shows. And even if you know the where and when, the what can be pretty elusive. Some of these damn bands have the gall to sing songs with titles that reflect neither the lyrics nor the catchy choruses! What's a guy to do? Damn them. Dumptruck was one of those kind. Hours of work, no joke, trying to identify the songs through intensive lyrical correspondence techniques developed by the secret Tibetan Third Eye Satellite Tracking Corps (Quincy Division) during the Fourth World War in the 70s. And the help of Seth Tiven of Dumptruck, who gave me a setlist for this years ago but which precious thing I have lost. He also gave me another show just as good as this one that I'll post someday.

Meantime, we can all feel lucky because those precious Dumptruck albums have been remastered and re-released! So, shit!

Thanks so much for this.
I loved "for the country"
if you have any more Dumptruck shows that you could post I would be grateful.

The song number 14 is a version of Bob Dylan's "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window".

Hey, thanks for all these great shows. FYI, the proper title of the first song on the Dumptruck is "Back Where I Belong." It's originally off Positively Dumptruck.

Excellent! Thanks for the info and glad you're enjoying the tunes. Gonna rip something this morning and try to get it up today. Wish me luck!

I've been searching for a live Dumptruck show for years. I kid you not! The big problem is their name. When you google Dumptruck...arghhhhh! Game Theory is another bastard of a band name to find googling, but I digress. Thanks for the up. Did you mention you have another DT show? I think I speak for us all when I say damn the song titles, full speed ahead! Looking at the dates from previous posters, it appears I'm a little late to the party. Great blog, by the way. I've spent the whole morning reading your posts. And yes, I buy shit. I bought all the released
Dumptruck CDs as soon as they came out.

Dumptruck, Guadalcanal Diary, Opal, etc. (grabbing that next), were such great bands that never got their just due. A real pity.

In the words of The Sperminator, "I'll Be Bach!" I'm going to listen to this concert right away. Thanks again for the great music and your insightful and unique perspective on many items.

Gmail is down, so thank you very much,
Oxy

Thanks for the nice show. Let me solve the last riddle. The 1st unknown song (track 8) is simply entitled "Night" and can be found on the album "d is for Dumptruck."

Keep on posting!

To Anon and Oxy - thanks! I got so sidetracked by life and politics that I forgot music was the original intention of this blog. I don't even remember writing the words in this post though I kind of like them and would like to meet the guy that did. I hope someday to have time to return to my bootleg collection and put more up, maybe in FLAC. Oh, someday, where are you?

I've found that great guitar music is the perfect antidote for A-hole politicians (even the loathsome Sarah Palin) and most of the curve balls life throws at us. I will admit, it's easy to get caught up in politics these days. The Patriot Act (what a name for an act that can strip any individual of all their rights and can also put you in prison for the rest of your life without even the curtesy of a trial!) started me writing my Representatives. Now, they want to monitor the internet and selective censor and/or ban sites that they find questionably legal or are not in the best interest of the American people (shades of China!). Blogs like The New Disease may quickly become a thing of the past. What galls me (besides the fact that my wife actually endorses The Patriot Act) is that most Americans are standing like sheep and are idly letting this happen. Get with it people. Learn what the government is doing and make your voices heard!

I really need some good, jangly guitar music now....

Gomonkey: I stumbled across this last night. Thanks for posting (the first half is still available)....I was at this show, and I remember being mocked by my roommate at the time who was more than amused at the name of the band. Well, he never seemed to care much for the music, either, so the name of the band is ultimately beside the point. Beyond the music here, thanks for putting up a good fight through your other postings...

Both parts are still up, Ken. If you had trouble getting part 2 for some reason, please give it another try. I just checked on them. Really glad you enjoyed it and thanks for sharing the story. If I had the time I'd still be putting the tunes up because it's so great to hear from other people about their experiences.
