Serious Reasons Not to Vote for John McCain #5 (or is it #6?)

Because we don't want to see this kind of reaction happen to a traveling American President ever again. And it will, with McCain.

Vote Obama!

Why wouldn't it happen with Obama? If he travels to countries with anti-American sentiment, it will happen.
Or are you implying that Obama will assuage all the bad feelings that Bush has earned?

If Jesus H. Christ, Allah and Buddha all formed a tri-presidency, we'd stil have peolpe protesting and hating us.

Yeah, you're right, it might or might no happen with Obama. That was an incredibly biased post on my part.

But I think we can gauge at least some of the future reaction to Obama's overseas visits as President from his recent tour. When was the last time Bush was received in Europe by cheering, American (!!!) flag-waving Marxists and Greens and Social Dems and every other sort of European political animal. We have forgotten how much the world really loves this country. From our political ideals to our rock 'n' roll, they think we're pretty great and thye get just as mad as we do when we fuck up.

I think, too, that until Obams fucks up - and I'm sure that he will on some issues; can't be helped - much of the world will give him a breather and a break. They want a new kind of American politics as much as we do. Now, if he decides that he's ONLY going to visit pro-American countries, that'd be a fuckup from the start. That won't help us or anyone else.

And I do think that a hard-working Obama presidency will assuage some of the bad feelings Bush has earned. It's one of the legacies he absolutely has to deal with and the recent tour was an example of how he partially intends to do this, by showing a positive, diplomatic and cooperative style of American politics that has disappeared during the last two terms of Bush.

There will be people hating us, yes, but that doesn't mean we can stop trying to talk to them. And I think an Obama presidency will represent, symbolically, such a dramatic change to the face of American politics that it will give many who are against us reason to pause. May not change their minds, but in education we call that brief pause a "teaching moment" and it has to be grabbed for all its worth.
